Barleywine Festival starts February 17th at the Toronado. In theory it lasts a week, but they start running out of some of the selections on the first day. They usually have 40+ (one year, I believe they had 55) barleywines. One of the best/ugliest events at the Toronado.

In theory, they open at 11:30 on Saturday, but always open the doors a bit earlier (possibly as early as 10). It's best to get there early and stake out a spot and get out before you end up a sacrifice to the BW gods. It's crazy busy for the bartenders (busiest shifts of the year, especially since they serve three sizes of each beer and people will order 4, 5 even 10 at one time), so be patient, be prepared and tip well (per beer, not by cost).

The mayhem is much reduced by Sunday (as is the selection of barleywines), so if you want something a little more mellow, just wait a day. You probably won't get a chance to try the top three barleywines, but there will still be an excellent selection. But if you haven't been to the first day before, it is quite a sight.

I'll be judging Saturday morning (barleywine at 9AM...woo hoo) and hanging out to try some of the others. Stop by if you dare.

I am getting to try Belgian brews I have not tried before. I had the Nostradamus which was warming with a hint of brown sugar after it sat for a bit.
As well I like that the prices deter a lot of the trendies as they do not want to buy a $8.50 beer when it is oh so hip to by a PBR for 89 cents at another bar.

Russian River Brewery " tion" Night At The Toronado

Description:
Feeling shunned? Come relieve your tension at the Toronado, with Russian River's "tion" beers. We are featuring all ten of the beers whose names end in "tion" two of which have never been served before and one of which has only been available at the brewery.

The beers are :

1. Redemption:
O.G: 1.046
4.60% alc. by vol.
26 BU’S
This is the sister beer to our award-winning ale, Damnation. Fashioned after a Belgian-style “single”, this ale is rarely brewed in America, let alone Belgium. Typically, “singles” are brewed only at the Trappist Monasteries for the monks to enjoy with meals. They often drink only half of a bottle with lunch and the rest with supper, despite the beer’s low alcohol content. Redemption is modest in strength, robed in warm golden hues, and soft on the palate with a smooth dry finish.

2. Perdition:
O.G.: 1.052
5.50% alc. by vol.
27 BU’S
Copper in color this Belgian-style pale ale has aromas of spicy hop, cinnamon and pear. The flavor starts out with an initial bready, light toasted malt flavor and finishes spicy and slightly yeasty.

3. Damnation:
29 BU’S
In the great beer producing country of Belgium, some brewers have made it a tradition to give their beers an unusual name. Sometimes the name is curious, now and then it is diabolical and other times it is just plain silly. Damnation is our brew master's interpretation of a Belgian style Strong Golden Ale. It has extraordinary aromas of banana and pear with mouth filling flavors of sweet malt and earthy hops. The lingering finish is dry and slightly bitter but very, very smooth.

4. Salvation:
O.G.: 1.081
9.00% alc. by vol.
25 BU’S
This Belgian style Strong Dark Ale has a tawny brown color and aromas of banana and spice that dominate the initial bouquet of the beer. Lean malt flavors blend perfectly with fruit driven characteristics created by the classic Belgian yeast which fermented this ale. The alcohol content is deceptively smooth just like its sister beer Damnation.

5. Sanctification:
100 % BRETTANOMYCES fermentation

6. Desperation:
Blend of Temptation and Pizza Port’s Mother of All Beers the main component in their Cuvee de Tomme.

7. Rejection:
Dark Belgian Ale brewed for Valentines Day.

8. Temptation :
O.G. 1.070
8.50% alc. by vol.
24 BU’S
This Belgian Style Golden Ale was aged in 60 gallon 5 year old malolactic positive French oak white wine barrels. The beer was inoculated with BRETTANOMYCES after primary fermentation and aged in the barrels for 9 months. These barrels had previously been used to ferment Chardonnay, which eventually would complete malolactic fermentation.

9. Supplication:
Aged in a Pinot barrel and inoculated with BRETTANOMYCES and lactobacillus.

10. Depuration:
Aged in a Chardonnay barrel with white grapes and inoculated with BRETTANOMYCES and lactobacillus.
